Maya Angelou is a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She is a Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.She has published ten best selling books and many magazine articles. She was requested by president Bill Clinton to write and deliver a poem in 1993 presidential inauguration.
Maya Angelou was born April 4,1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1931 Maya and her brother spent most of their years traveling back and forth from their mother and their grandmother house. When she was eight years old she was raped by her mothers boyfriend, who was than killed by her uncles.
Maya Angelou stayed mute for about six years. Then at age 16 she gave birth to a son named Guy. She then toured Europe and Africa in the musical Porgy and Bess. Then she returned to New York back in the 1960's. She also joined the Harlem writers and became involved in Black activism.Then she went to Ghana and became an editor. That when she began to take her writing more seriously.
she played in some outstanding movies. Tyler's Perry Medea's Family Reunion, The Ballad of Green which Village, The Runway, and Down in the Delta. She always played an inspiring actor. She worked with many famous actors.
She also have famous poems. For example Still I Rise, Phenomenal Woman, The Black Family Pledge, and INSOMNIAC. Those poems are very inspiring to me. She had many wonderful quotes. But my favorite one is "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
Maya than created a five-volume autobiography (I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings). This was very successful because it told about her childhood. She wrote a lot of outstanding and encouraging books and poetry.She has been an big influence to black history and will always be remembered for her God giving talents.
